Im Alter von nur 22 Jahren musste sie ihr Land verlassen, weil Saddam Hussein am 16. M\u00e4rz 1988 chemisches Gas in die Stadt Halabja geworfen hatte. Seit 30 Jahren lebt sie nun in Frankreich. Beim Besuch einer Gem\u00e4ldeausstellung in Paris sagte Zerya: \u201eDas ist kein Apfel\u201c, ein Bild aus Magrittes Serie \u201eVerrat der Bilder\u201c. Dieses Gem\u00e4lde offenbart Zeryas vergangene Traumata. Zerya stellt sowohl eine historische als auch eine \u00e4sthetische Beziehung zwischen dem \u201eApfel mit Nelken\u201c, der in der kurdischen Mythologie die Liebe ausdr\u00fcckt, dem Geruch von \u00c4pfeln im Gas, das bei dem Massaker verwendet wurde, und dem Gem\u00e4lde von Magritte her.
